Design

The following are works completed in my Document Design class with Professor Ben Lauren.

Assignment 1:

In this assignment, we had to redesign a document we use on a daily basis.

The document I decided to redesign was an old copy editing checklists meant to help copy editors, the users, at The Beacon learn Associated Press style faster. By learning these things, the copy editors are able to edit stories quicker and deliver a better quality newspaper to the audience, the clients.

Assignment 2:

In this assignment, we had to create our own infographic based on research from our own work or someone else's work.

As I started designing my infographic, Islamic Awareness Week was quickly approaching. It’s a week dedicated to dispelling misconceptions about Islam to the average person. However, Islam is not the only thing many Americans misunderstand. Too often, I find that people do not know what feminism is all about. But when they ask me to define what feminism is, it’s hard for me to come up with a simple and clear answer. I decided to accumulate my own research and the work of a few others to design an infographic that would answer both of these things at once through the comparison of “Western feminism” and “Islamic feminism.”

Assignment 3:

In this assignment, we had to create a poster of some sort, whether a meme or a book cover, on Photoshop.

The document I decided to redesign was a book cover for “Don Quijote” by Miguel De Cervantes. It’s a story that fascinates me as one of the biggest sellers next to the Bible. It has been translated into many languages and many book covers and depictions have been made for this story. I thought it would be challenging to create something new with so many photos out there already. The following is my product.

Assignment 4:

In this assignment, we had to remix a document to cater to another population completely.

The document I decided to change up was the “Don Quijote” cover. Initially I thought about making a cover for seniors, but then I considered designing a cover for a children’s version of the story and thought that would be a lot more fun. I also used Photoshop to design this cover and it was really great because I got to practice painting with all the different brushes. I even stuck with the same image but cooked it a little differently.
